IPv6 for industrial embedded devices

This article presents the development of an embedded IPv6 device for industrial use. Despite the fact that transition between IPv4 and IPv6 has been gaining attention in the past few years, there is not a concrete study of its impact in Industrial Networks.
This article presents the advantages of using an IPv6 device over an IPv4. Moreover, it presents the implementation of an IPv6 device and the design choices are faced during the development process. Additionally, the different design choices have been clearly identified and a comprehensive explanation of the selection is presented.
Finally, the most critical problems (selection of IP stack, network auto-configuration, and maturity of the IP stack) where discussed. As a result it is shown that the usage the open source lwIP stack is ready for use in industrial products. As future work it is expected to improve the performance of the IPv6 stack in order to remove any abnormality.

Axel Vidales Ramos (M’05) received the Bacherlor in Electronics System Engineering degree (with Honor Diploma and member of the Advanced Learning Program for High Achievement) from the Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey, Mexico, in 2005. He obtained the M.Sc. degree in production engineering and he is currently pursuing the Dr.Tech. degree in automation engineering at the Tampere University of Technology (Tampere, Finland) in the Department of Production Engineering as Research Scientist. He has more than four years of experience in European research and development ICT projects in the field of Industrial Automation. His main research interests are in communication protocols, web-based technologies, applied to the field of factory automation and embedded devices.
