The VideoLAN project developes a complete Open Source multimedia playing and streaming solution for multiple platforms. Its main product VLC media player is available on Linux (Debian, OpenSuSE, Fedora, Ubuntu, RHEL, Mandriva, ALTLinux, and ArchLinux), MacOS X, *BSD (OpenBSD, NetBSD, FreeBSD), Solaris, and Windows (2000/2003/XP/Vista).
The VLC media player is a highly portable multimedia player for various audio and video formats including MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, DivX, mp3, and ogg, as well as DVDs, VCDs, and various streaming protocols like UDP, RTP, RTSP, and MMS. It can also be used as a server to stream in unicast or multicast in IPv4 or IPv6 on a high-bandwidth network.
In this talk VLC as media player will be highlighted and especially the new features in upcoming version 2.0 (currently in development). To name a few: HTTP Live Streaming, Blueray, multi-threaded decoding (with ffmpeg-mt), hardware decoding (Broadcom Crystal HD), lua extensions, SDI (Linear Systems, Black Magic), android, and many more new features.

Jean-Paul Saman is a consultant, senior software architect and engineer since 1994 with experience in developing multimedia, embedded and networking systems. He has worked for various companies in Research and Development jobs as well as in productizing software. Since August 2004 he has worked for his own company M2X BV (www.m2x.nl), that provides commercial services for Multimedia, Networking and Embedded systems using Open Source software. Furthermore he actively contributes to Open Source Software projects such as: "Das U-Boot (Universal bootloader)", VideoLAN (DVBlast, VLC, libdvpsi) project and the Linux Kernel.
